The multibrand retailer opened on Friday, drawing hundreds to browse its luxury menswear and home goods.
New York City's boutique retail renaissance isn't in SoHo or Williamsburg, nor is it online.
Ven. Space, a luxury menswear retailer, has officially opened at 369 Court Street, the space across from Carroll Park where yoga studio Llamaste used to be. Founder Chris Green, formerly the general merchandise manager of Need Supply Co. and Totokaelo, held an opening party for the store on Friday, Sept. 13, drawing more than 300 people to browse apparel, shoes and accessories from Auralee, Casey Casey, Comme des Garçons Homme, Dries Van Noten, Lemaire, Maison Margiela, Our Legacy, The Row and more from Ven.'s brand assortment.
I wrote about Ven. Space for WWD, where I was a reporter and editor for some years. I spoke with Green about why it made sense to open Ven. in Carroll Gardens; the store's Noguchi Museum-like interiors; and his views on the wider luxury landscape. Spoiler alert: Green is an optimist! (Not a true spoiler. You have to be an optimist to open a luxury store at such a time. Also, he opened a store on Friday the 13th!)
One thing I neglected to mention in WWD is that Ven. has an in-house apparel line. The label is produced in Los Angeles, with some fabrics sourced from Japan.
You can read the full article here, and my favorite quote from Green below.
“A store is a bit of a selfish proposition. I’m approaching it from my point of view,” Green said of his brand matrix. “That’s what I think makes stores special — if they have a distinct point of view, they become a destination.”
