Who They Are
A family-run Italian specialty food shop that has anchored Carroll Gardens since 1973. Founded by Giuseppe Caputo, a native of Mola di Bari, Italy, and now run by his son Frank and grandsons Joseph and Franco.
What They Do Best
Fresh mozzarella, made by hand in small batches every hour. It’s been the shop’s signature since day one — soft, creamy and nothing like the supermarket version.
What to Order
The mozzarella, always. The Italian Combo sandwich. Beyond that, the handmade pastas and raviolis, available in a rotating roster of fillings, are not to be missed. Pick up a jar of sauce, some imported olive oil and a wedge of cheese while you’re at it.
Why We Go Back
Someone will call you sweetheart. Frank, Joseph or Franco will ask how you’re doing and actually want to know. The shelves reward browsing (there’s always something you didn’t know you needed). And the mozzarella, made fresh that hour, is reason enough on its own.
