We’re So Back
My husband and I are back from the Philippines, where our family and friends showered us with love for 2 weeks straight. We wed, we parasailed, we ate, we rode tricycles, we snorkeled – and I have the X-shaped bikini sunburn-turned-tan lines to prove it. I am so full of love and joy, I’d like to spread some of it here to you all. Have a wonderful weekend ahead :)
This Week’s Slow Read
Slow Read, a CSJ editorial concept, is an invitation to slow down and enjoy a read, from beginning to end.
A few weeks ago, I sat down with Henry Julier, a Carroll Gardens-based industrial designer whose collaboration with USM Modular Furniture bows this weekend. I asked him a series of questions about his design philosophy, his favorite material to work with, the most useless object he loves, the everyday object he’d redesign and more. Read the full Q&A here.
The Roundup
An edible exhibition featuring NYC-based confection artists kicks off at Hudson Wilder, one of my favorite Dumbo spots, today, May 17. The collection will evolve each weekend from now until the middle of August. Doesn’t this description make you want to eat?
Kane Street Synagogue in Cobble Hill is hosting an e-waste recycling event tomorrow, May 18. You can finally offload all of those outdated electronics you’ve been hoarding in that one drawer because you didn’t know what else to do with them. It is apparently illegal to throw old monitors, printers, cables, etc. in the trash, and you could be fined $100 for doing so. Side note: I may need to do a story on proper trash/recycling practices…
*Family friendly activity* → The Brooklyn Grange is hosting a plant sale and family farm day tomorrow, May 18, in Sunset Park. Free entry gets you access to shop seedlings and indoor plants, tour the space (sliding scale), do yoga (sliding scale), participate in free activities organized by City Growers, get tacos and more.
Local beauty influencer, Sephora ambassador and my friend Kristina Rodulfo is hosting an open event at the beauty retailer in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month! Attendees will take home a gift bag of Kristina’s favorite products from brands like Tower 28, Tatcha and Dieux (hits only). The event takes place May 29 at Sephora (300 Madison Ave). RSVP here, and subscribe to Kristina’s Substack, Pearl, here.
Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks has his own namesake sandwich at Court Street Grocers.
If you live in Gowanus or shop at the Whole Foods there, you might recognize this building. Did you know it was constructed as a functional advertisement for a cement stone company?
The Coignet Stone Company Building, built in the 1870s, is thought to be NYC’s first fully concrete building. It’s newly listed on the market by Corcoran for $2.99 million.
I feel like this could be a great location for a concept store or gallery, so long as the math makes sense. It’s such a beautiful building, but so oddly distinguished from its surroundings. Who will buy this building of intrigue, and what will they do with it?
