What I Wrote This Week
I wrote about in-yc, a new app surfacing the arts and culture events happening in your neighborhood right now. No fancy algorithm, no hyper-curated feeds – just pins on a map. The name is short for “in your city,” as founder Jerid Gooding sees potential for country-wide expansion. For now, the focus is on West Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The Roundup
A five-alarm fire swept through 481 Van Brunt Street on Wednesday evening, devastating a space that had become a creative hub for Red Hook. The building was home to the work of more than 500 artists preparing for the neighborhood’s annual Open Studios tour. Also housed there was LaNoBa Design, known for its stunning collection of Danish midcentury furniture. The shop was completely lost in the blaze and has since started a GoFundMe page, raising $18,000 in less than 24 hours.
West Brooklyn Waterfront Mutual Aid (WBWMA), a volunteer-led network, has been supporting families across Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and the Columbia Waterfront since the onset of the COVID pandemic. Contributions fund groceries, household essentials and urgent needs for local residents. Neighbors can pitch in or ask for help by visiting wbwmutualaid.org. Donations can be made here, and volunteers are always welcome.
